What Is ASTM A790 S31803 Pipe?

The product is a typical grade seamless and welded duplex stainless steel pipe. It has a bi-modal microstructure composed of around 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

The alloy's development was driven by a need to address a common issue with 300 series austenitic steels—chloride stress corrosion cracking. The product's exceptional performance is provided by the combination of ferritic steels' yield strength and austenitic alloys' corrosion resistance.

As a result, pressure ratings and durability are not compromised, and the walls may be thinner and much lighter. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) for these elements ranges from 31 to 35. Chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen are in the 21–23 range.

Both the yield and tensile strengths are much higher than those of 316L stainless steel, measuring 450 MPa (65 ksi) and 620 MPa (90 ksi), respectively. It is ideal for heat transmission because to its high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion.

Core Advantages of Our ASTM A790 S31803 Pipe

Superior Material & Functional Performance

S31803 duplex steel combines a balanced ferritic-austenitic phase ratio. This gives our products double the tensile strength of standard austenitic tubes. You also get superior defense against chloride stress-corrosion cracking.

The physical advantages include a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic grades. This makes it perfect for heat transfer applications.

Rigorous Production Quality & Testing Standards

Our pipes are hot pierced and cold reduced under stringent metallurgical parameters. We perform mandatory rapid water-quenching operations followed by chemical descaling pickle baths. This optimizes passive layer corrosion defense across the complete metal body.

Every production batch undergoes comprehensive testing:

  • Ferrite Count Testing (ASTM E562) to verify 40-60% phase balance
  • Pitting Corrosion Test (ASTM G48 Method A) for localized attack resistance
  • 100% Ultrasonic Testing and Hydrostatic Testing for zero leakage
  • Charpy V-Notch Impact Test at -40°C for low-temperature toughness
  • Intermetallic Phase Detection (ASTM A923) to ensure optimal ductility

Versatile Customization & Dimensional Options

Our manufacturing capabilities support your specific project requirements. We offer heavy wall profiles up to Schedule XXS and custom batch identification laser stenciling.

You can choose from various end configurations including plain, beveled, or flanged ends. Precision compound angles and beveled endings follow ASME B16.25 codes.

We maintain over 5,000 tons of rolling inventory for rapid delivery. Stock orders ship within 3–5 days, while custom orders are completed in 15–20 days.

Industrial Applications

Offshore Oil & Gas Production

Used on subsea manifolds, flowlines and umbilicals. The astm a790 s31803 pipe is resistant to high pressure CO2 and H2S conditions, and maintains structural integrity in saltwater corrosion.

You benefit from reduced maintenance cycles and extended service life in harsh marine conditions.

Desalination Plants

Employed in high-pressure Reverse Osmosis (RO) piping systems. Where high chloride concentrations and high flow velocities would cause rapid pitting in lesser alloys, our duplex piping maintains performance.

The superior corrosion resistance translates to lower operational costs and fewer replacement needs.

Chemical & Petrochemical Processing

Utilized in heat exchangers and evaporator tubes handling aggressive organic acids. Our pipes provide a long-term alternative to frequent maintenance cycles caused by stress corrosion cracking.

You get reliable performance in chloride-contaminated process fluids and high-temperature oxidation environments.

FAQ

Q:What defines the foundational pressure containment superiority of this astm a790 s31803 duplex pipe?

A: S31803 duplex steel is a ferritic-austenitic balanced steel which gives this pipe double the tensile and yield strength of conventional austenitic tubes. Better protection against chloride stress-corrosion cracking loops makes it a perfect fit for high-pressure applications.

Q:Why is a seamless manufacturing path critical for this dual-phase product line?

A:The hot-pierced and extrusion-formed seamless body provides a fully uniform, joint-free cylindrical wall profile. This entirely eliminates weld line vulnerabilities and localized mechanical structural shifting under intense continuous load.

Q:What specialized destructive quality verification benchmarks must this duplex batch successfully pass?

A:Representative production coupons undergo strict quality compliance audits. These include phase ratio balance verification (Ferrite 40%-60%), Charpy V-Notch impact diagnostics down to -40°C extremes, and intergranular corrosion tests per ASTM A923 methods.

Q:Can this duplex series be customized with specialized edge configurations for thick-walled heavy-duty joints?

A:Yes, we support extensive custom fabrication options. You can order precision compound angles and beveled endings according to ASME B16.25 codes. We also offer bespoke high-thickness schedules up to SCH XXS for your demanding applications.

Q:What stenciling and marking methods ensure complete batch accountability during international logistics?

A:Every pipe is continuously laser stenciled with the exact heat number, manufacturing standard, and dimension schedule. We ship with comprehensive traceability and quality documentation including thorough EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 Mill Test Certificates.
